Why We’re Different?

Our Inner Shift Method combines psilocybin-assisted therapy with inner child work, parts work (IFS), and somatic therapy. This isn’t about escaping or chasing insights. It’s about creating the conditions for deep emotional work to happen: safely, consciously, and with expert support. Our retreats go far beyond the psychedelic experience itself: they are structured spaces where meaningful change can begin.

Face your deepest fears while feeling supported and nurtured by our experienced facilitators and mostly female team. We guide you towards deep internal shifts, helping you move from challenging states to impactful realisations.

Since 2018, we’ve pioneered psilocybin mental health retreats, becoming a leading force in the field. Today, as The Inner Shift Institute, we continue to lead with vision, competence and a heartfelt commitment to each individual’s journey through psilocybin-assisted therapy.

We specialise in addressing confusion, lack of self-worth, feeling lost, depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism, OCD, eating disorders, co-dependency, imposter syndrome and other mental health struggles, providing tailored support to guide you towards lasting trauma healing and growth.

The Shift Retreat will take place in The Netherlands where Psilocybin truffles are legal. Only a 2 hour train ride away from Amsterdam or a 1 hour ride from Duesseldorf, we find our retreat venue. We have chosen a place of tranquility surrounded by peaceful nature – a location that will guide us to a place of tranquility within ourselves.

Our Inner Shift Method is a carefully crafted approach designed to facilitate profound transformation through psilocybin-assisted therapy sessions.

Here’s how each component contributes to the process:

1. Creating an Emotionally Safe Space

The foundation of our method is establishing not only a physically safe environment but also an emotionally secure space. By embracing emotional validation and removing the shame around emotions, we empower you to freely explore the depths of your subconscious mind. This unreserved acceptance encourages you to express and navigate through your emotions with ease, making it possible to dive deep into self-exploration and healing.

2. Compassionate Inquiry

Unlike many providers who choose not to intervene during the journey, we actively engage with you by asking purposeful questions that align with your intentions and healing goals. Given the heightened state of consciousness induced by psilocybin, you are better equipped to uncover and understand deep insights. These timely inquiries guide you towards profound realizations and facilitate a transformative healing process. Our clients share with us how important these questions were to be directed into the right direction on their psilocybin journey.

3. Subconscious Reprogramming

Core beliefs about unworthiness, unlovability, or insufficiency can deeply affect your life. Our method utilizes subconscious reprogramming techniques during the peak moments of the psilocybin journey to address and shift these detrimental beliefs. This pivotal aspect of the Inner Shift Method allows you to emerge from the experience with a newfound love and acceptance for yourself, transforming your internal narrative.

4. Empathetic Reflection

A pivotal element of the Inner Shift Method is our role as empathetic mirrors during your journey. Our facilitators are not just observers; they deeply empathize with and reflect your experiences. This profound level of empathy ensures that you feel seen, understood, and supported at every step. By resonating with your emotional landscape, we offer guidance and validation that enhance the therapeutic process, making your journey towards healing and self-discovery a shared and deeply validated experience. This approach fosters a powerful sense of connection and trust, allowing for a more open and transformative session.

5. Trauma Healing

From years of experience, we know that psilocybin experiences can unlock the subconscious, potentially bringing traumatic memories to the forefront – even those long forgotten. These may be deeply ingrained memories from early childhood or even birth. These memories can be visual memories or emotional memories. Our facilitators are adept at identifying and guiding you through these pivotal moments of trauma, ensuring what could have been a distressing experience transforms into one of profound healing. This approach turns potential “bad trips” into therapeutic sessions, offering significant healing and growth.

6. Inner Child Work

When past traumas surface, we employ inner child work to navigate these challenging waters. Our facilitators are trained in trauma integration therapy, allowing us to guide you through moments of deep discomfort that may reemerge during a session. This aspect of our method involves nurturing and healing your inner child, offering the support and validation needed to heal old, unprocessed, longstanding emotional wounds. This aspect of our method ensures that healing is not just temporary but addresses the root causes of emotional pain, leading to lasting change.

7. Meeting Early Childhood Needs:

Our facilitators are adept at addressing needs that went unmet during your early childhood. If your psilocybin journey uncovers difficult memories rooted in unhealthy family dynamics, our facilitator embodies the role of a loving parent or caretaker, offering the support and nurturing previously absent. This unique aspect of our method provides a corrective emotional experience, promoting healing and closure.

8. Overcoming Resistance

It’s not uncommon to encounter resistance due to fear, a desire to control the experience, or mental overactivity. This inner resistance can block the psilocybin journey from starting, leaving the participant in a waiting state. Our method includes proven therapeutic tools to help you move beyond these barriers. By shifting from a state of mental resistance to one of bodily presence, we facilitate the commencement of the psilocybin journey, enabling you to access the transformative potential of the experience fully.

9. Nervous System Regulation

A key component of our approach involves working with your nervous system through somatic techniques. By helping you regulate your nervous system, we enhance your ability to stay present and connected throughout the journey, ensuring a more grounded and transformative experience.

10. Trusting Your Inner Healer:

An integral part of our method is recognizing when to allow space for the psilocybin to guide the process and when to intervene. We respect the healing and learning facilitated by the medicine, choosing not to intervene when you are in a space of growth and surrender. Trust in your inner healer is paramount, balancing guidance with the autonomy of your journey.

11. Integration:

A critical phase of the Inner Shift Method, integration bridges the gap between your psilocybin experience and your daily life. This process involves consolidating the insights, emotional breakthroughs, and transformative realizations into actionable steps and sustainable changes. Our facilitators guide you through reflecting on your journey, identifying key learnings, and applying them to create meaningful, lasting changes in your life. This ensures that the profound shifts experienced during the retreat continue to enrich and guide you long after the immediate effects of psilocybin have subsided, making your transformation a lasting cornerstone of your personal growth and development.

The Inner Shift Method is a holistic approach that integrates modern psychological techniques with the ancient wisdom of psilocybin, offering a comprehensive path to healing, self-discovery, and profound personal growth. Through this method, we support you in navigating the complexities of your inner world, leading to lasting transformation and a deeper connection with your true self.

Our Psilocybin Retreat Guides

A serene close-up portrait of a woman standing in front of a tree, symbolizing grounding, clarity, and healing through psilocybin therapy

Alice Smeets is the founder of The Inner Shift Institute and the creator of The Inner Shift Method, a groundbreaking approach that combines psychedelic-assisted therapy with trauma-informed techniques such as inner child work and parts work. Since 2017, she has guided more than 600 individuals through legal psychedelic journeys, facilitating profound breakthroughs and lasting change.

Known for her out-of-the-box thinking and willingness to speak the truth, even when it challenges convention, Alice is a transformation catalyst who helps people create extraordinary lives on their own terms. As a neurodivergent thinker deeply attuned to multiple perspectives, she draws from intuition as much as intellect, finding creative solutions to entrenched challenges. Her ability to ask the right question at the right time guides clients to uncover answers within themselves, often unlocking clarity they have been seeking for years.

Alice holds a Master’s degree, speaks three and a half languages, and has lived and worked across the globe, including in Haiti, Costa Rica, and Bali. She has trained extensively with both indigenous shamans and leading Western psychologists and researchers in the field of psychedelics.

Her path is shaped by personal transformation. She has overcome depression, healed deeply dysfunctional family patterns, and navigated life as a bisexual woman in a world that often struggles to embrace difference. She knows what it is like to feel stuck, disconnected, and hopeless and she knows, firsthand, that it is possible to build a life worth waking up to every morning.

She is committed to helping clients move from a state of survival toward greater self-acceptance, trust, and resilience. Rachel is a clinical psychologist, psychedelic facilitator, and Holotropic Breathwork facilitator with over 20 years of experience. She helps people find their own answers and build trust in their ability to heal. She supports them in working through their challenges and strengthening their sense of self.

In her work, Rachel follows the principle of “non-doing.” Rather than directing or deciding what someone needs, she helps clients make sense of their emotions and physical impulses, creating a wider, non-judgmental perspective from which insights can arise. She is fully present with those she works with, including during difficult and challenging moments.

Rachel first encountered Holotropic Breathwork during her psychology studies at the age of 23 and was immediately drawn to the potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness. This experience confirmed her decision to become a psychologist and shaped the direction of her professional path.

She went on to obtain a second Master’s degree in Transpersonal Psychology and Consciousness Studies, a field of psychology that recognizes spirituality as a human need. In 2016, she completed the Grof Transpersonal Training and became a certified Holotropic Breathwork facilitator. She is also trained in EMDR therapy.

Rachel holds the perspective that expanded states of consciousness can play a powerful role in healing and self-development. She believes that many healing processes are less about doing more and more about allowing space, letting go, and returning to one’s essential self.

Sanne is an experienced psilocybin guide, artist, and singer-songwriter. Since 2019, she has guided more than 200 individuals in psilocybin sessions, drawing on her training in trauma work, inner child work, and parts work. Her approach is both structured and creative, combining therapeutic methods with music to create meaningful and supportive experiences.

Her path into this work began at the age of eighteen when she experienced a heart attack and near death experience. While she recovered physically, she later discovered she was living with anxiety, PTSD, and dissociation. This turning point led her to study the impact of trauma on mental, emotional, and physical health.

Over the years, she has worked with teachers and mentors who taught her how to address trauma at its roots, work with the subconscious mind, and use psilocybin in a responsible and intentional way. These studies, together with her personal journey, gave her the tools to guide others through challenging inner experiences.

Sanne believes that meaningful change is not about quick fixes but about addressing underlying patterns, living in line with one’s values, and practicing honest self-expression. She supports people in moving from disconnection to connection, from self-doubt to confidence, and toward a life that feels authentic and grounded.

Integrating trauma and adverse experiences

Beyond words, there’s a language that belongs to the body. And since the body holds stories, memories, and patterns that shape the way we move through life, this language is the key to our deepest freedom. When we listen deeply, we come to understand that healing is not about fixing what’s broken, but rather releasing what no longer needs to be held. This is the space Corinna creates.

As the chef of our group retreats, as well as a Multidimensional Bodywork Therapist and certified teacher in Vinyasa and Yin Yoga, Corinna uses the body to guide people back to their inner wisdom—not only through movement and presence but also through nourishment. Trauma, stress, and emotions don’t just exist in the mind; they are woven into the muscles, the fascia, the joints, the breath, and the nervous system. Through her cooking, she supports deep transformation, crafting meals that don’t just feed the body but also create space for healing and connection.

With over a decade of experience leading and being led in retreat spaces—and drawing knowledge from both Western and Eastern traditions—she has cultivated a profound ability to read people and spaces, allowing transformation to unfold naturally.

Corinna approaches food as a portal for self-discovery. The way we eat mirrors our most primal and intimate world, reflecting the way we walk through life. Her company Sacred Food became an extension of this vision because the more curious we are about our true nature, the more open we become to stripping away the layers of conditioning, expectations, and old stories—so that what is real can finally be felt, seen, and integrated.

Caro is a mindset and personal development coach and psychedelic facilitator who helps people identify and change limiting beliefs so they can live with greater clarity and purpose.

As a neurodivergent woman, she brings a heightened awareness and unique perspective to her work, often noticing details others might miss. She supports clients in recognising self-sabotaging patterns and understanding how these influence their lives. Through this process, they learn to question old assumptions, make conscious choices, and create lives that feel meaningful to them.

Caro’s own life experiences deeply inform her work. She has let go of a long-standing sense of guilt, overcome people-pleasing tendencies, and rebuilt her self-worth. She has also addressed patterns of codependency, worked through anxiety, and recovered from two traumatic birth experiences.

By approaching her own childhood experiences with greater care, she has learned to be a more compassionate mother and to raise her children to be confident, curious, and creative individuals. Outside of her work, she enjoys dancing, spending time with her children, gardening, writing, meditating, practicing yoga, and exploring new subjects.

To help you get most out of your therapeutic Psilocybin journey, we have created an online preparation (5,5h) and integration workshop (5h). These workshops are designed to equip you with the tools and insights needed to maximize the therapeutic benefits of your psilocybin experience and seamlessly integrate the profound changes into your daily life.

Integration is an important part of your journey. During your retreat, we provide a private, 1 hour in-person integration session to help you process and reflect on your experience. With expert guidance, we’ll explore how to incorporate the insights gained into your daily life, ensuring that your deep inner shift continues beyond the ceremony.

Your psilocybin ceremony is fully customized to meet your unique needs, with the dosage carefully adjusted to align with your specific intentions. We typically follow the standard dosages recommended by Johns Hopkins University for a therapeutic experience, but we remain flexible to ensure the best outcome for you. If needed, you can receive a boost after one hour to deepen your journey. Whether you prefer a profound exploration or a more gentle experience, we work with you to determine the ideal dose. The ceremony is further enhanced with meditations, providing a strong foundation for your experience.
