The Voice of the Plants – Mapacho
For thousands of years, plants have been seen not only as medicine, but as teachers. Each one carries a distinct character, a message, and a way of working with us that goes far beyond chemistry. In this series, I let the plants speak for themselves. Their words are a way to reconnect with an older kind of knowing—one that listens, respects, and remembers the intelligence of nature.
This first conversation is with Mapacho, the sacred tobacco known as Nicotiana Rustica. Once revered as a plant of protection and clarity, it has long been misunderstood in the modern world. Here, Mapacho introduces himself and shares the essence of his nature: his power, his purpose, and the respect he asks for in return.
Meet Mapacho: The Sacred Tobacco Teacher
Hello, my name is Mapacho. That is the name the South American indigenous tribes who have used me in their religious ceremonies for more than three thousand years have given me. Other names I listen to are Nicotiana Rustica, Aztec Tobacco, Wild Tobacco, Ucuch, and Tuoc Lao.
Containing nine times more nicotine than the common species, I am a very potent variety of Tobacco. Heavily misunderstood in modern times, the Tobacco family has been sold as health deteriorating, addiction-causing plants, when really, our intentions are pure. If used with dignity and consideration, we will help to restore your health and improve your well-being. Let me show you my true self.
The Spirit of Mapacho – Protection, Power & Grounding
I AM THE FATHER. I AM THE WISE LEADER. THE GIFTS I OFFER ARE STABILITY AND PROTECTION. I WILL SOOTHE YOUR ANXIETY AND HELP YOU EASE YOUR FEARS.
I will anchor your energies and make you feel and appreciate yourself in your body. You will sink into every muscle with an extreme sense of relaxation that feels like home thanks to my ability to bring inner peace. With me, you can feel the beautiful soil underneath your feet connecting you to nature and the earth.
I bring strength, courage and integrity. I move through your energy system and purify everything that does not belong there.
Traditional Uses of Mapacho and Its Purifying Nature
You can soak me in water or turn my dry leaves into powder and sniff me in liquid form through each nostril. Occasional purging, burping and farting may turn the first minutes of the experience into an uncomfortable event, which will quite soon turn into a sensation of release and liberation. My masculine power acts like a “defence shield” from unfavourable entities and fear provoking thoughts.
You can drink me in the form of a tea. In this form I will make you vomit fiercely but only to set free the inner violence that imprisons you and turmoils your mind. My tea is traditionally used to foster strength and mental clarity. I am an ordeal medicine, which often involves feeling awful during the experience in order to feel better afterwards.
I will cleanse your system energetically and physically. I flush out toxins from your body and strengthen your immune system. I am anti-viral and anti-bacterial and knock out stubborn infections. My natural laxative effect will improve your digestion. I clear flukes, parasites, fungus and other pathogens from your system. And, I increase the potency of other herbs while pushing them into action four times as fast.
I clear away superfluous energies and I am a powerful aid for setting intentions.
The Visionary Wisdom of Mapacho
I talk to you in images, stimulate your mental acuity and bring you insights in the form of clear visions. Remember your skills, resources and successes in life? My charming wisdom can remind you of your abilities, moving you into action, if you wish.
By burning my leaves and turning me from earth into air, I serve as a means of communication with the spiritual world and help to keep spaces safe.
YOU MAY TRUST ME, FOR I AM THE EMPEROR OF GUARDIAN SPIRITS, BUT USE ME CONSCIOUSLY AS I TOO HAVE SHADOWS, PREDOMINANTLY CONTROL AND HIERARCHY.
Misunderstandings Around Mapacho and Tobacco
My potential for over-activeness can lead you into dependency, which is why I and the other members of the tobacco family are one of the most misunderstood plants in today’s society.
People use my brother Nicotiana Tabacum, the chief commercial crop, to escape their anxiety and fall addicted to our protective nature. Instead of listening to our insightful teachings which lead to personal power and responsibility, they use our mastery to escape themselves and mask their problems.
They blend chemicals into our medicinal leaves, rape us into fields and fields of mono-cultured seeds and totally exploit our soothing spirit. That is not what we are here for. Our role as a sacred plant is a ceremonial and structured one.
I will bring you out of chaos into clarity and clear away obstruction. I am a holy herb and when used with caution and respect, I will show you how to turn your fears into courage, your anxiety into peacefulness and your anger into power.
Thanks for getting to know me.
Let’s Breathe!
Yours truly,
Mapacho
Characteristics of Mapacho – How This Sacred Tobacco Is Used
1. Liquid Mapacho
You cover my leaves in water and soak them for at least one hour. You then pour this liquid into the cupped palm of your hand, inhaling a pea-sized amount with each nostril. I will help you clear out negative energies, soothe anxiety and bring you back into your body in a peaceful state.
If you repeat this procedure several times I can induce visions during your dreams that will show you your subconscious inner workings.
2. Mapacho Tea
A warm tea is made from my leaves and consumed, followed by warm water. This will lead to strong vomiting which stimulates the elimination of toxins and blockages (physical, mental and emotional).
Do not go through this alone!
This is an intense and potentially VERY dangerous experience and requires facilitation from an experienced guide who knows me well.
This session is ideal for:
Cleansing your body from toxins and parasites
Moving through fears and repressed emotions
Bringing peace and soothing anxiety
Improving the capacity of your lungs
Letting go of self-destructive habits
Preparing the body for entheogenic ceremonies
3. Mapacho Smoke
The smoke of my burning leaves is often used to cleanse the space during ceremonies. Because of the extreme nicotine content, even frequent smokers have been caught off guard by my potency. Many users prefer only a few puffs at a time, and the effects generally make themselves known within a minute.
Safety, Respect & Preparation for Working With Mapacho
Inhaling my liquid through the nose is not dangerous if done in moderation. That is different from my consumption during a tea ceremony. Never do the tea cleanse alone, as it can be deadly if not dosed right. Find a trustworthy and experienced shaman.
I do not recommend the tea cleanse for pregnant women, those with extremely low blood pressure, or those who have had traumatic injury or operations involving the brain or heart.
Diet Preparation (3 days before & after a tea ceremony):
No Salt or Sugar
No Meat, Fried or Oily Foods
No Spicy Food
No Drugs, Alcohol, or Marijuana
No eating/drinking for 3–4 hours before the session
No Sex
When my leaves are smoked without conscious intent, the risk of nicotine addiction is exacerbated by my consumption.
Possible Effects of Mapacho
Psychological Effects
Disorientation, stimulation, unusual perception of the world, mood swings, intense dreams.
Physical Effects
Increased heart rate, purging or vomiting (tea), nausea, watery eyes, dry mouth, coughing, shortness of breath, lung strain when smoked.
